HRL is excited to share the latest from FSD Hot Rod Ranch in Eustis, Florida! Especially if you are into haulers, this beast of a build – a 1950 Chevrolet COE Frame-Off Restoration with a GM ZZ4 V8 / 700R4 Engine – is an awesome find.

A COE, or cab-over engine – also known as cab-over or cab forward in the U.S., flat nose in Canada, or forward control in the UK – means the cab sits directly over or forward of the axle and usually has a flat front or semi-flat hood. In other words, you sit over the engine rather than have it directly in front of you. This design was created and used for vehicles that need to have a tight turning radius, which is a perfect design for hauling horse trailers or other large toys.

Under the hood of this truck is a GM PERFORMANCE! Crate motor, ZZ4 5.7L, a 350 SBC V8  that produces 355 HP and 405 ft-pounds of torque – a very desirable engine.  An automatic transmission the GM 700R4 makes for a smooth and comfortable ride.

The plusses keep mounting when adding a customized driveshaft and Wildwood disc brakes, all of which sit on a custom fabricated steel frame (built in 2019 by Windy “Scooty” Hoops of Illinois).

The frame isn’t the only custom feature on this 1950 ride; it also features custom fabricated polished diamond plate flatbed & engine cover, custom fabricated stake-side bed rails [FSD Hot Rod Ranch] and custom fabricated polished diamond plate storage bins.

The look is equally custom, with American Racing Salt Flat mag wheels with a machined lip, LED lights, and a gorgeous slate gray paint with hand-painted pinstripes!

Rebuilding, customizing, and upgrading didn’t eliminate the charming details of the original vehicle; the steel sun visor and dashboard offer the nostalgic feel of a bygone era.  The original dashboard encases classic gauges and a retro digital sound system.

The gray leather bucket seats, tweed interior, under-dash A C system (so very necessary in Florida!), nad power windows all complete the experience, giving a luxurious feel to this custom and powerful build.

What really amazes me is the insight these craftsmen have when taking something that looks like a forgotten pile of rust and then turning it into something powerful, durable, and nostalgic.  It takes time, knowledge, craftsmanship, a creative vision…and a lot of patience.
