Adventures Of The Horse Doctor’s Husband, written by Justin B. Long, is a book recording everyday life living with a veterinarian – who also happens to be the author’s wife, Erica Lacher.

Long, who is also a fine arts artist and musician as well as an author, assists Dr. Lacher in her equine and large animal veterinary practice (Springhill Equine Veterinary Clinic) located in Alachua County, Florida.

For those of you who followed Teddy Bear Highway, titled the miracle horse of I-75, Dr. Erica Lacher was the attending veterinarian at the scene of this horrific event on November 30, 2018. Justin Long, her husband, drove the trailer which later transported Highway to their clinic.

Highway, for readers who are not familiar with his story, is the horse sighted and reported by motorists and found standing in a ditch along the heavily trafficked interstate I-75 in Florida. It was later discovered that while being transported along with other horses, he either backed out or was thrown out of a trailer onto the highway, suffering multiple and serious injuries. It was also discovered the trailer wafs headed for the kill pens.

Whether destiny or a miracle, Highway has become a symbol of all horses who become disposed of in such horrific fashion at the hands of man.

Even though the book relates tragedies such as Highway’s, it is a light-hearted and easy read. While it touches on the heartache as well as the satisfaction of healing that comes with being in the medical field, it also highlights the joys of everyday living with our animal and human companions. It is a feel-good book that everyone should read.

It also lends insight to a vet’s life, especially one who specializes in emergency calls 24 hours a day. As a horse owner, I know the anxiety of a weekend or midnight call when a horse in your possession becomes ill or injured. I now have a better understanding of the other side of the emergency call and what it means for the recipient.

The purchase of this book can be made on Amazon or at Springhill Equine’s site. The website also features podcasts titled “Straight From The Horses Mouth” and offers valuable information desirable for horse owners.

I would also like to mention that in December of 2019, a check for $1000 dollars was donated to Dream Catcher Ranch, a horse rescue and stable, in the name of Highway and Springhill Equine Veterinary Clinic. Dream Catcher Ranch is now the home of Teddy Bear Highway.
